Write to get published, not to get rich and then you won't ever be disappointed in this regard. First time author's don't usually earn huge advances. And the industry is really struggling to keep its head above water now, so typical advances are less than they use to be. Do you want real numbers here, or is this enough?

Real numbers would be wonderful. The point is not to get rich, but to be able to recognize if something is fishy. If $50,000 is reasonable, and we are offered $500, or $500,000 then we will know to be suspicious and ask more questions.
